UNA DÈCADA DE SOMNI PROFUND

Una dècada de somni profund (a decade of deep sleep) is a research project based on the arts, which aims to generate a space for reflection and creation on the transformations taking place in the Nova Esquerra de l’Eixample neighbourhood. The Estel building, which is located in the geographical centre of this area, creates a fracture in the surrounding urban landscape. It is currently undergoing a refurbishment process that will convert it into an office block. There is a synchronicity between the time when this project is proposed and the time when this building will return to business use, after suffering a long period of abandonment.

Its character, which was static and unalterable, has allowed us to think about real estate speculation in the city of Barcelona. We understand this space as an exchange value, a barren landscape where dreams and expectations have been deposited that have not been able to move forward. By recording the changes that are now taking place, we want to counter-cartograph the building and the effects it generates in the neighbourhood. We are interested in the impasse space, the threshold between states, this ephemeral zone that opens in the processes of transformation. We want to explore the expressive possibilities of this temporality through the poetics of the construction grid. This material element marks the state of the city’s buildings and appears in the processes of rehabilitation and transformation of the urban space.

We like to understand this building as a monster that has been sleeping while breathing through its structure without a façade, covered by a membrane of nets. Now the metamorphosis of the concrete monster begins, unveiled by the noise of the drilling machine. What was Estel dreaming about?

The project is accompanied by Lúa Coderch.
