El treball del dol is an investigation of representations of the emotional and cognitive processes associated with the death of a loved one and the key figures linked to them. It is approached from the transition of grief, with the aim of relating them and creating a fabric, a pillow to lean on.
Although death is universal and we may have specific links with the person who has died and their context, grief is structured and processed in different ways depending on society, culture and personal belief systems. Bearing in mind that every identity is conditioned and constructed by economic, socio-cultural and gender factors, etc., my intention is to use these same conditioning factors as a starting point for this research process: from my subjective experience, from the space-time I inhabit. My interest thus centres on the contemporary cultural representation of grief in Western cultures and on personal and subjective experiences related to the issue.
The project seeks to open up spaces which allow us to talk to people close to us who are going through or have gone through this process, to revisit cultural representations of grief in films, series, books and so on, which they may already have seen but had not identified as expressions of grief, and to find new ones; at the same time, to put all this into context it is necessary to investigate the history of the representation and social expression of grief in Western cultures. Why are there no mourners or no visible mourners? Are they not willing or able to speak about it? Are there no representations of grief or are they not visible?
El treball del dol is part of a joint programme organised by ACVic, Centre d’Arts Contemporànies, and Sala d’Art Jove
The project has been supported by Marta Echaves.
