FUNCIÓ TRENCADA. ARXIU D’OBJECTES RECONFIGURATS
Hacking is the art of breaking an object in order to give it other uses and meanings. It can also be seen as a gesture encouraging us to rethink and reappropriate a small portion of the (mass-produced and global) material world that surrounds us and makes us what we are. By appropriating images taken from films, Funció trencada. Arxiu d’objectes reconfigurats seeks to generate a collection of micro-alterations that showcase a variety of hacks.
Hacking can be thought of as a practice that destabilises world-objects. By breaking the object in a formal or functional sense, we can alter its substance and appropriate it, generating other narratives and (un)expected links, creating spaces in which to exist and take shape. Thus, hacking involves a view of breaking as potentially inviting us to see other ways of existing through it. And if, as Sara Ahmed opines in Para qué sirve (2020), we think of broken bodies as those that can be broken again, the breaking of the hacked object can be understood as a prophecy, a form of wished-for destiny. It thus not only allows us to make small spaces for ourselves but also shows us objects as potential, as things that never quite are, that can be modified and re-signified. In short, the act of hacking can be understood as a micro-political action: a fleeting reappropriation of the materialities that surround, guide and affect us. A moment of fabulation, which opens little crooked paths.
Funció trencada. Arxiu d’objectes reconfigurats is an audiovisual piece which compiles, collects and unites hacks appearing in different films. If we view film as the art that produces many of the images that shape our global worlds, we find it interesting to seek in its gestures micro-alterations of objects which generate small material breaks, thus re-appropriating the images they (con)form. In other words, to create an anarchive, a space that, by bringing together and organising this collection, invites us to understand the power of rupture through a public exhibition that allows us to explore other possible worlds; in other words, a site of ruptures where nothing wishes to function as it should. What happens when certain actions that seemed isolated are related? What is the importance of the archive?
The project has been supported by Anna Moreno.
