TRAVESSAR EL SOLAR
Travessar el solar explores the worship of the sun through a sculptural and performative work. Featuring a dialogue between classical and contemporary mythological narratives, the project is part of an investigation which examines the capacity of the performative object to generate new imaginaries which allow us to redefine our relationship with the environment. Drawing on the proposal of a performative game between machine and nature, the project critiques the Western conception of what is considered natural and seeks new perspectives and resonances to bring us closer to other potential worlds.
The work consists of creating an autonomous artefact which when in contact with the sun generates sounds, movement and improvised melodies and generates ephemeral site-specific performances.
This performative game challenges the traditional distinction between machine and nature, expands it and opens new pathways of intimacy between the two worlds. Travessar el solar is inspired by autonomous musical instruments popularised in the late 19th century and by objects and materials from the Iberian Peninsula’s folk tradition. The research explores the lost role of the technological machine as a source of amusement, a role that transcended its mere utilitarian function and also afforded it subjective and imaginary value in our lives.
The project has received support from Marc Salicrú.
