SWEET WRECKER O LA NOVIA DE LA MUERTE

In one of my cyber wanderings through the depths of the internet, as a non-binary addicted to deranged virtual content I discovered Moranbong Band, a pop group strategically created by the North Korean state to somehow make visible and exalt the North Korean authoritarian regime as well as tie their homeland to an innocent, kitsch and even somewhat irreverent icon.

I was fascinated by the way in which this strategy, in addition to instrumentalising a hegemonic pop girl band to generate an enlightened discourse on Kim Jong-Un’s regime, hides something of a surrender to mass culture through the interpretation of nationalism with the purpose of creating a sense of collective affection.

Sweet Wrecker o la novia de la muerte came out of this context, a creation and research project which seeks to foster a link between pop culture, the notion of collective identity and identity dissidence as a political agent while also reflecting how love and affection can become a tool of manipulation and structural violence.
