TRAVESSIES 3
EXAMEN ORGANOLÈPTIC D’UN REPRODUCTOR DE DVD
INPUT 1: Deep buttons, opaque surfaces and tight screws prevent us from accessing the inside of a hermetic box. However, if we look closely, we can identify a single element that has successfully entered this restricted space: an electrical cable located on the back left, indicating the starting point of our journey.
INPUT 2: In this sense, the cable conducts electricity – a flow of electrically charged particles – inside the device until it becomes a sound signal. Specifically, a mechanical buzzing, suggesting that the box is not empty and that you need to listen closely to hear the conversation.
INPUT 3: At the same time, the electricity is also converted into a motor force which, upon our request and for a few seconds, presents us with a floppy disc drive. It leaves behind a slit where we can see what is inside the hermetic housing. The mechanism controlling the movement creates a vulnerability in the device for a few moments, allowing us to observe its interior before a tray (one of receiving rather than giving) activates a message that commands us to: INSERT DISC.
INPUT 4: Next, a motor stirs up a swirl of thick dust, not at all suitable for anyone with allergies. Remember to breathe in, if you can; this may be another indicator that your device has started to work.
INPUT 5: Similarly, the motor capable of rotating at 500 revolutions per minute causes a series of vibrations that can be perceived with the palm of your hand. Interestingly, the aluminium of the casing that prevented us from gaining visual access to the interior of the device becomes our perfect ally: a conductor capable of establishing an approximate map of the position of the parts through the intensity of the tremors
TRAVESSIES
The Travessies are cross-cutting, temporary paths; the lands we retrace to move from one point to another. Faced with the urgent need to question bodies and return them to the centre of artistic interventions, we propose drifting away, moving around the spaces we have already lived in, to move. We reexamine the concept of ‘Travesías’ to trace spheres of resonance that put the body in vibration; sound journeys that allow us to get lost and alter our course, now more than ever, within cities: stimulating the territories and turning them into a potential framework for experimentation.
Some of the winning artists from the Art Jove 2020 call bring us closer to their artistic projects through listening, guiding us on an unknown journey that opens up infinite paths of circulation and movement. The proposal is based on the desire to activate projects spilling from the “online” format, involving bodies actively and referring to the first lifting lockdown measure: walking alone at set hours of the day.
A proposal from the Art Jove 2020 mediation team: pli-é collective (Eva Paià, Marina Ribot Pallicer, Angelica Tognetti).
